Your problem is that you haven't seen enough movies - all of life's riddles are answered in the movies.

MARKUP is an
editing process
often requested
for screenplays
as they make
their way from
original
submission
by the
screenwriter to
the final copy
that will
actually be used
on the film set.
This term has a
wider range of
meanings than
most in the
industry. To
some producers,
the markup
process is
basically a
re-write of the
screenplay – or
at least a
portion of it.
To others, it
represents a few
less dramatic
editing process
that may be
geared toward
improving the
work in one
particular
targeted area.
The term
itself comes
from the days of
printed, paper
screenplays and
the result of
markup process
where the
document exits
the process
covered with red
pencil lines and
new text. The
process remains
basically the
same today, but
it is far more
automated.
Other
associated terms
and people
related to this
process include
“script doctor,”
“script editor,”
and “script
consultant.”
It should
be noted that
while the markup
process may
dramatically
change the text
of the original
screenplay, the
people doing
this type of
editing are
rarely credited
in the final
product – due to
a variety of
well-established
rules and
regulations in
the industry.
